Your questions

The 6-week Trinity Certificate in TESOL with Active Language - your TEFL course online and in Cádiz or in Málaga

A unique 6-week online and in-person TEFL experience

Gain a TEFL qualification of the highest quality in just 6 weeks and experience learning and teaching both online and in-person. This course uniquely combines the best of both virtual and physical worlds to give you knowledge, experience and confidence as you start your new career as an EFL teacher.

The Trinity Certificate in TESOL is an internationally-recognised and fully accredited English teaching TEFL qualification, recognised by language schools and online platform employers all over the world. This course both recognises and reflects the reality of how many teachers work mixing both online and in-person teaching.

Our course is for anyone who wants a high quality TEFL qualification and who wants to grow into the best teacher they can be; whether you speak English as a first language or have learnt it as an additional language, and where everyone should feel valued, respected and catered for. Active Language is an inclusive organisation and is committed to helping learners and teachers achive their goals and fulfill their ambitions.

The first 3 weeks ONLINE

In the first 3 weeks online, you will gain teaching knowledge through an engaging, dynamic combination of independent, flexible work on the online modules at times to best suit you. You will also deepen knowledge with Zoom group workshops, seminars and 1:1 tutorials.

In this first part of the course, you will also experience and reflect on the experience of learning an unknown language and also start work on the other teaching assignments.

You will also begin Teaching Practice, the heart of the course, having already gained knowledge of how best to teach languages online. In Teaching Practice, you will teach

adult students in small, online classes and receive support guidance from our dedicated tutoring team.

The second 3 weeks IN CÁDIZ or IN MÁLAGA

In the second half of the course, Teaching Practice shifts to the in-person or “physical” classroom. You will complete the remainder of your teaching hours with local, adult students developing your teaching skills in this environment. Your tutors continue to support you as you gain more independence in a supportive learning environment. You will also complete the remaining assignments and modules through a mix of online and face-to-face support.

There is no better place to complete your course than in Cádiz or in Málaga (we think!)

Cádiz is the oldest city in Western Europe and is a magical combination of expansive, sandy beaches and the atmospheric old town. It is a small city that you can walk around easily which is a great stress-reducer. There are few things better than a walk along the beach and a few deep breaths to regain balance and calm.

Malaga is a city that combines a rich historical and cultural heritage with modern infrastructures and an exceptional quality of life. The Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía, located in Malaga, is one of the main centres of innovation in the region.
The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers, and has extensive beaches.
Malaga is also an important cultural centre, home to the Picasso Museum, which exhibits many of his works. In addition, the Centre Pompidou Malaga and the Carmen Thyssen Museum are also located in the city.

After your Trinity CertTESOL course

As a graduate of our CertTESOL course, the relationship continues long after graduation. You can broaden your knowledge through our teacher development courses, including the popular Teaching Young Learners certificate and when you have more experience, the Trinity Diploma in TESOL gives access to management, training and materials writing positions.

Our personalised and ongoing Careers Service will help you find the best teaching positions for you both online and in-person across the globe. We are available throughout your career, with advice to find solutions to your teaching puzzles as well as general careers advice.

The 12-week Trinity CertTESOL, the professional choice in TEFL, at a gentler pace.

Most people are surprised at the intensity of the 6-week course and those who have more time might prefer to take things at a gentler pace. If you have the time, why would you rush through the experience?

The Trinity Certificate in TESOL that you receive at the end of the course is exactly the same whether you choose the 6-week, 12-week or 24-week course. It is an internationally-recognised and fully accredited English teaching TEFL qualification, recognised by language schools and online platform employers all over the world.

Through the course you gradually build teaching knowledge, experience and confidence through the course. Throughout the 12 weeks, there are practical, dynamic, interactive online workshops and you will also study independently in your own way on the online learning platform.

The heart of the course is, as always on the CertTESOL, in the teaching practice. It’s a practical course and you will gain confidence and experience through the guided, observed and assessed teaching practice. The classes take place online using Zoom and you will teach real students. This genuine teaching practice is one of the main reasons why employers value the Trinity CertTESOL certificate so highly.

You can expect to spend a significant amount of time working online, sometimes working independently and at other times in groups. You can expect to spend around 18 hours a week working on the course. There are on average 7 timetabled hours a week of live sessions including group seminars and teaching practice leaving approximately 11 hours a week to work through the material in your own way. The hours are approximate because, of course, some people work more quickly and others more slowly.

The feedback we have received from employers is that teachers who have taken the course with us online are well able to switch to in-class teaching. It is generally easier to switch from online to in-class teaching rather than the other way round.

The reality for most English teachers is a working week either teaching only online or mixing online and in-class teaching. With this course you will be well-prepared for teaching in all environments.

Active Language has been training teachers for over 15 years, you are in good hands. Our 94% pass-rate is thanks to personalised support from experienced and passionate tutors. You will be guided by professionals who really care.

The Trinity CertTESOL is the best way to start your career teaching English as a foreign language.

The 24-week Trinity CertTESOL, the professional choice in TEFL, for people who already have a busy life.

Many people want to take the Trinity CertTESOL but are simply too busy to take a more intensive course. Perhaps you need to make the course fit around existing commitments whether they be family, work or other things, this might be the course for you.

Throughout the 24 weeks, there are practical, dynamic, interactive online workshops and you will also study independently in your own way on the online learning platform.

The Trinity CertTESOL is the best way to start your career teaching English as a foreign language.

Training to teach English online is a hugely fulfilling and enriching learning experience. You are being trained in the medium that is quickly becoming the most popular way of learning.

Whatever choice you make about the length of your course, you will do a significant amount of work online. Some parts of the course are delivered live, or “synchronous” and other parts you can do at your own pace, “asynchronous”.

All live, synchronous, training is delivered on Zoom. There are dedicated workshops on how to best use Zoom and your interview will also be via Zoom, so you will see how this video-conferencing platform works before the course has started. Even tech-novices will be able to do it.

Throughout the course, you will attend practical training sessions and seminars online, led by our team of experienced CertTESOL tutors. During these dynamic and interactive training sessions, you will work in pairs and small groups and collaborate to make the most of the digital environment as well as providing transferable techniques and skills to use in physical classrooms. We believe in learning through involvement and many sessions will involve a workshop approach, where your tutor acts as a ‘facilitator’ rather than as a lecturer.

You will also spend time studying at your own pace via our online learning platform as well as interacting with your teaching colleagues and the training team through the discussion forum. As you work through the modular content on our online platform, you will learn more about how to teach English. We will look at areas such as teaching methodologies, classroom management and how to appropriately select and adapt materials, amongst others.

As a pre-service qualification, through the CertTESOL course you’ll learn how to teach English and so you don’t need to have any previous experience of teaching.

Many people for whom English is a first language or those who have acquired English informally feel that their grammatical knowledge is poor: “I speak the language but I can’t explain why. How can I teach it?” is a common concern.

We are unique in offering a pre-CertTESOL Language Awareness course to help prepare you, should you feel you need it, in addition to the required 20 hour pre-course task. This course is available on payment of the 400€ deposit and we strongly recommend that all trainees complete it before starting the course. It will take you through the basics of English grammar and phonology and help to prepare you for the exam you will take to assess Unit 2: Language Awareness. You will also learn more about language and grammar as you move through the CertTESOL course.

You do not need to have a university degree, to speak English as your first language, to speak a foreign language or to have any previous teaching experience.

To be accepted onto this course, you will need to:

– be at least 18 years old

– be educated to the standard required for entry into higher education

– be in good enough physical and mental health to deal with the demands of an intensive training course

– have a minimum C1 level of English. As your level of English will be assessed through the interview, we do not require you to hold a certificate but do accept the following: Trinity ISE III or GESE 10, Cambridge CAE or CPE, IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL 105. In fact, approximately 50% of our recent graduates from the CertTESOL speak English as a second or third language

– demonstrate your ability to cope with the academic demands of the course. There will be a short written assignment to complete following your interview

It is an intensive TEFL course. You will expect to spend around 4-6 hours each day dedicated to the course. This will be online in synchronous or asynchronous sessions (in the first 3 weeks) or in-person with your colleagues attending seminars, training sessions or teaching (in the second half). As part of the course timetable, there will be time dedicated to guided lesson planning as well as reflection and feedback with your tutors and colleagues. You will spend around 10-15 hours a week outside of the course timetable planning lessons and writing assignments. It is important to say that you will not have a similar amount of work to do every night. There are busy and less busy times. Time organisation and management is key! The course is “frontloaded” which means that a lot of the language awareness, TEFL methodology and teaching skills input is done at the beginning of the course in order to equip you in the best way possible for the classroom.

What happens in teaching practice Teaching practice is the heart of the course where you will teach real students. You will teach a minimum of 6 hours and will work in small groups with a tutor who will guide you through each lesson encouraging increased independence as you move through the course. Your tutor will give you support planning your classes, observe the lesson and give you feedback. You will also spend a significant amount of time observing your colleagues, providing you with the opportunity to learn from each other.

Over the 6 weeks you will teach two different groups of students giving you experience of different levels as well as different tutor support. You will also observe a minimum of four hours’ of lessons delivered by experienced teachers. These will include observing your tutors teaching the learners you will work with on the course, as well as pre-recorded lessons.

Teaching practice is where you grow as a teacher. By the end of the course, the aim is that you feel confident planning, delivering and reflecting on your teaching. You will learn from both your tutors and your colleagues and put into practice what you have learnt.

Here at Active Language we have been training teachers on the CertTESOL course for the last 20 years so you are in experienced hands. We care deeply about each teacher`s training journey and we work hard to provide the individualised support and guidance needed throughout the course.

The CertTESOL course will give you the skills and understanding you need to be confident of accessing good jobs and to feel comfortable in any classroom in the world whether it is a physical or an online classroom.

Reputable organisations, such as the British Council, will only accept accredited teaching qualifications and the Trinity Certificate in TESOL is one of the two main qualifications which are accepted worldwide. There are a bewildering number of TEFL, TESOL or CELTA courses available and it can be difficult to see the differences between them.

TESOL stands for ‘Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages’ and TEFL stands for ‘Teaching English as a Foreign Language’ they are generic names for the same thing rather than courses. The Trinity CertTESOL is an official qualification in TEFL provided by Trinity College London. The CELTA is accredited by Cambridge University and enjoys equal standing to the Trinity CertTESOL. There are many other courses available too, though they vary wildly in cost, depth and, importantly, recognition within the profession.

With our Trinity CertTESOL you are getting international accreditation that you can be proud of as well as all that our course has to offer: live tutor time in small groups, teaching practice with real students, a personal approach and on-going, career-long support.

The course is delivered and assessed through five units. The work for Units 1, 2, 3 and 5 is marked by your tutors and checked by a member of the Trinity moderation panel at the end of every course. The moderator externally assesses the work for Unit 4.

The units are as follows and rest assured, the tutors are here to help you every step of the way. A large factor in our high pass rate is the dedication and professionalism of the training team. The tutors’ job is to help you through the course.

Unit 1: Teaching Skills – assessed through your tutors’ evaluations, your teaching journal and reflections. Professional awareness and development are also evaluated as part of Unit 1.

Unit 2: Language Awareness – including grammar, lexis and phonology, assessed through a short exam. Our unique pre-course Language Awareness course will help you prepare thoroughly for the exam, as well as setting you in good stead for teaching grammar, lexis and phonology during your observed lessons.

Unit 3: Learner Profile – assessed through your evaluation of an individual learner’s strengths and weaknesses and a series of planned lessons for that learner.

Unit 4: Materials Assignment – assessed through a written rationale and evaluation of a piece of teaching material and an interview with the Trinity moderator

Unit 5: Unknown Language Journal – assessed through a reflective journal following four hours spent learning an unknown language.

Many teachers from outside the EU live and work in Spain very happily, there are,of course, a few things you should be aware of. People coming from outside the European Union (including the Schengen Zone) should make sure they have the correct documentation to cover them for their time in Spain.

The situation changes periodically from country to country. All the information here is correct at the point of publishing. You should check the situation and please do contact us if you have any questions.

Many people come in with just a tourist visa and the length of their stay depends on where they have come from, typically, people can stay for 90 days before any extra visa requirements come into play.

Other people come into Spain with a student visa, which you will need to apply for in your own country before you come. We can supply any documentation necessary to support your application for a student visa. Please do consult with us before you make your application as we will be able to advise and help you through the process. The process can take some significant time, you should apply in good time. With a student visa you can work for up to 20 hours a week. A full-time teaching position is generally 24 hours a week, so 20 hours a week provides a living wage. You can then stay until the end of your employment contract even if (as is usually the case)

A very small number of people are able to enter Spain with a full working visa. This is very unusual and requires very specific skills in certain sectors.

These are general guidelines, please do consult with us before making any decisions and we will help you through the process.

For all enquiries, please contact us at training@activelanguage.net

As soon as you have completed the qualification you’ll be able to start teaching and with the CertTESOL, you should have your pick of the jobs.

The train station in Cádiz is located on the edge of the old town. If you choose to book accommodation through us, we will send you the address and let you know the best way to get there.

Getting to Málaga

It is much easier to get to Malaga than it is to Cadiz!

There is a large international airport in Malaga and good train and bus connections too from throughout Spain as well as local bus, train and metro connections.
As with Cádiz, if you choose to book accommodation through us, we will send you the address and let you know the best way to get there.
